Schepdaal Trammuseum

Preserved Vicinal: The SNCV-depot in Schepdaal is the companies museum since 1962 (since 1991 owned by De Lijn). Until 1968 it remained in use as a storage facility for service trams of line "Ni" Brussels (Porte de Ninove/Ninoofsepoort) - Dilbeek - Ninove which was at last abandoned on 21st February 1970. It's history is much older though. Opened in 1887 it was the terminal station of the Brussels - Schepdaal steam trams. Between 1888 and 1889 it also saw the use of 2 ROWAN steam railcars. In 1898 the line was extended to Ninove and electric cars reached Schepdaal for the first time in 1925. The station/depot complex (including water tower) survives in almost original condition today. The rolling stock preserved here (looked after by the AMUTRA Association pour le Musee du Tramway society/VETRAMU Vereniging voor het Trammuseum) stretches from the steam & diesel era to the elegant streamliners of the 30s/40s. The large depot yard sees the operation of electric trams (weather permitting). Visiting the museum is like stepping back in time - don't miss this experience.

The Schepdaal tram museum has seen many trams since it was inaugurated in the early 1960s. Some trams were here only for a a few years and can now be found in other collections. The fleet list (roster) below shows the vehicles that could be found at Schepdaal at the end of the 1990s. As soon as the museum re-opens to the public we will update this list and also include the missing photos. Later we will also show some of the vehicles that have left Schepdaal.

SNCV/NMVB/NKG

A short history: From 1885 to 1990 Belgium had the National "Vicinal" Tram Company. In it's best days (1939) the company operated 4.962 km of tracks. It was possible to get across the whole of Belgium by using only Vicinal trams. The trams in Ostend (coastal system), Charleroi and a little tourist line in the Ardennes mountains are the only survivors today. On 1st January 1991 the Vicinal was divided into a Flemish company (VVM Vlaamse Vervoermaatschappij / trading as De Lijn) and a Walloon company (SRWT Société Régionale Wallonne du Transport / trading as TEC Transport En Commun). The remaining urban transport undertakings were integrated into these new companies (only Brussels remained independent). The tramway network of VVM/De Lijn now includes Antwerp and Gent as well Ostend and that of SRWT/TEC the Charleroi pre-Metro and the diesel operated line Grottes de Han-sur-Lesse, but this line is leased to another company.
